This is one of Robert Burns' most evocative poems on the fortune of man in the world. He mourns the fact that he has inadvertently turned over a daisy with his plough. He then finds himself comparing its ill fortune to that of a careless "maid" betrayed by a simple love and "soiled … low in the dust" or any man where luck seems to have turned against him.
Finally don't you, who read this poem think you will escape. That same "Stern Ruin" is after you too!
