This is my first invention. My mother had set me to the piano to get me out of her hair. I was 10 years old and the year was 1967. That year a pop band called Simon & Garfunkel reproduced an old English round well known as Scarborough Fair. I fell in love with that melody and wanted to write my own. Thus, out popped Shepherd’s Hymn, a simple round. This song was also the first song where I attempted to apply counterpoint. Yes, again simple, but very challanging for a kid. Then, later, this song was the first piece to undergo orchestration in Sibelius. Now, I sometimes call it Symphonic Round, as it has truly gone through a few revisions. Fantastic learning piece to me.
