Three Times Five
Three Times five was composed in 2012, after listening to much music for large chamber ensemble given by Ensemble 10/10, the contemporary music ensemble from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. It is written for three groups of five instruments, woodwind, brass, and strings. The general format is a sort of concerto grosso.
In the first movement each group of five instruments plays concertante in turn with the other two groups playing ripieno. The slow movement is an adaption of Bach’s choral prelude style with a theme derived from Cantata No. 177 Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ. The theme is played in turn by horn, clarinet and viola with counterpoint provided by the upper instruments of other groups and the bass provided by the third group. The final movement is a fugue in which all instruments play the subject at some stage. At the climax, a version of the choral appears, contrasting with the counterpoint of the other instruments. Material from the first movement is interjected in places.
Threes and Fives are also reflected in the rhythms of all three movements and in other less obvious ways. Whilst the work is tonal, major, and minor are scarcely used. The first and last movements are largely in the Phrygian mode and the slow movement in the Dorian mode. However less conventional scales are also used in the fugue.
Three Times Five is recorded by Ablaze Records, Sinfonia Series Vol. 2.
