Robert Browning's pet name for his beloved Elizabeth was "…my little Portuguese." Elizabeth Barrett Browning communicated prolifically to Robert through love letters in the form of poetry. Her most recognizable and venerated were the collection of letters known as "Sonnets From the Portuguese." This composition for solo Soprano and piano sets three of Browning's finest sonnets in a through-composed song form. I. I tought once…, II. But only three…, and XLIII. "How do I love thee? (Let me count the ways)…are perfectly balanced for music. These three songs are passionate, intense….and even sultry at times. They are a treat for both performers, and a familiar delight for audiences.
