Thomas Tallis was a "Gentleman" of the Chapel Royal during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I, and together with his pupil, William Byrd, was given the exclusive license by Queen Elizabeth to print and publish music. The style of religious musical writing varied during his lifetime between polyphonic and homophonic writing. All three of these pieces are in the polyphonic style. The first, If Ye Love Me, is a quite beautiful in its simplicity. They second, the Nunc Dimittis demonstrates a rather shocking harmonic clash that could be a feature of this style of writing. The third, Gaude Gloriosa Dei Mater was written for the Catholic Queen Mary when polyphony was most popular. They are all technically very easy to play, although maintaining accurate counting is essential as if you loose your place it is hard to get back in step.
This arrangement is scored for 1 Eb (with alternative Bb part), 4 Bbs, 1 Alto (with alternative Bb part) and 1 Bass with optional 2nd Bass, Contra Alto and Contra Bass parts, so a minimum requirement of 6 Bbs and 1 Bass.
