I was lucky enough to work with the soprano soloist and concert pianist Larisa Ezhelenko, and we performed together several songs that I had written inspired by Purcell. There are three in this collection, the first is an original song based on a chaconne bassline of the sort that Purcell used frequently. The second song is a reworking of the famous aria from Dido and Aneas, When I Am Laid In Earth, but with my own shifting, contemporary harmonies, exacerbating the sense of unease that Purcell evokes in the original. Finally, an upbeat setting of Shakespeare's Where The Bee Sucks full of whimsical, shifting, almost jazzy, harmonies that echo Shakespeare's words.
