This group of settings is made up of "A Roving", "The Lusty Young Smith", and "The Jolly Tradesman". These songs are of the type popular with sailors, soldiers and in taverns in the 17th and 18th centuries, and are sometimes still heard today in one form or another. A friend of mine remembers singing "A Roving" as a school boy in Scotland, though in a milder version than used here. Any number of variations on the lyrics can be found on the internet and in other sources. They all feature thinly veiled metaphor and double entendre used to tell of the sexual adventures and misadventures of their protagonists. I have used the term "bawdy", but it is fair to say that "The Lusty Young Smith" borders on raunchy. If you are easily offended by such things, these songs are probably not for you. For me, they are all in good fun.
