This Life Giving Bread was written for guitar and drum band.
Stanzas 1and 2 are based on the Anaphora of Hippolytus. This joyous marriage of the ancient and the modern places our communion with each other and God within first a cosmic then a human context, and finally back in stanza 5 to the cosmic and eschatological. The Eucharist is seen here as an extension of a participatory Christology. Aspects of the Anaphora that are a precursor to modern liberation praxis have been highlighted by the addition of the third stanza. Biblical Christologies of healer, prophet, exorcist, teacher, and reconciler are introduced in the later stanzas.
The lines,
“Shine your face upon us, teach us from your mountain
To speak your peace to every nation”,
allude to both the Transfiguration and the Sermon on the Mount.
Stanzas 4, 5 and especially 6 reveal the writer’s Quaker background.
If the refrain is repeated at the close, sing one repetition without accompaniment.
