I’d spent some time teaching my S3 class about themes, variations, ground basses etc and we’d listened to a variety of materials. I decided to write them a silly wee piece to illustrate some of the techniques and used the lyrics to embed the SQA musical "concepts" in the score so that, for example, when there is a melisma, the word "melisma" is being sung. It seemed to work as 3 years later some of them were still using my line "melismatic passing notes" to explain what a melisma is to someone else!
Though written with voices in mind there is no reason why a class ensemble of instruments can’t play this though the point of embedding the concepts in the lyrics will be lost. However, if anyone would like Bb, Eb, easy harmony, alto clef parts etc please email me and I’ll get some arranged asap.
