This is a Theme and Variations based on an Original Theme written for a Diploma.
The Variations names are based on their structure, namely:
- Contra: This variation attempts to counter the theme using contrapuntal devises in a miniature-modified version of the invention form.
- Tetra: This variation attempts to accentuate the motif in the theme as an accompaniment to the same theme. The motif, a four note element, is made up of a tetra chord of Eb, F, G, and Bb.
- Secondal: This variation resides on various secondal chords meaning there are always added 4ths, 9ths or 6ths to the chord making them secondal.
- Romantic: The piece is Romantic in character, featuring patterns which Chopin used frequently. Also the tempo a piacere which is synonymous to the Romantic era.
- Glass: This piece uses the same pattern as the “Opening” in Glassworks of Philip Glass.
- Fixed/Variable: Although this piece doesn’t feature polyrhythm, the idea remains the same. For 13 bars (bars 1-13) the left hand remains constantly playing the same rhythm (pulse) and music, whilst for the next for bars the right hand plays the same rhythm and music (bars 14-17) where the fixed idea again shifts to the left (bars 18-23).
