Tchaikovsky wrote The Year 1812 for the then nearly completed Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, dedicated to Russia's victory over Napoleon's army. Largely written in November 1880, he called the overture "very loud and noisy…lacking in artistic merit." His Serenade for Strings quickly followed, a work completely opposite in character. The March 1881 assassination of Tsar Alexander II delayed the premiere under August 1882. Despite Tchaikovsky's misgivings it quickly became one of his most popular works for orchestra.
