The Wild Horseman (literally ‘the wild rider’) features in a collection of 43 short piano pieces ‘für die Jugend’, written in 1848. At the time, Schumann had three daughters under eight years old, who perhaps inspired him to compose with young beginners in mind. Although the first part of the collection is suited to novice pianists, the later items (pieces 19 – 43) are more challenging and are labelled ‘für Erwachsenere’ – ‘for the more grown-up’.

The Wild Horseman is number 8 in the collection, making it one of the ‘child-friendly’ pieces. In arranging it for the clarinet and bassoon combination, some extra difficulty, in the form of running accompaniment passages, has been added.
