The very favorable response accorded “Fly By Day (Big Band)” has inspired me to pursue the big band genre. This arrangement is an expansion of the condensed jazz quintet version of “The Symphony Kid” posted since Dec. 2000. The optional trumpet solo is admittedly fantasy fulfillment on my part – what I would play if I really knew how to play the trumpet – but not beyond the abilities of a reasonably competent player. Conceived intuitively, the solo nevertheless illustrates certain tension-release mechanisms and the use of so-called “target phrases” that anticipate harmonic “destinations” in advance. Instrumental ranges have been kept practical to suit average playing abilities; the Trumpet I max is a concert B above the treble staff with an optional concert C on the last note, and no saxophone part goes higher than a written C#. Trombone I max is F# above the bass clef. On the lower end some momentary agility is required by the bass trombone, baritone sax and 2nd tenor but I believe this is manageable. Regarding the title, there is only one possible name for this piece, with its built-in humor and swinging/non-swinging schizophrenia, but I apologize to anyone jarred by the title’s similarity to the jazz standard “Jumpin’ With Symphony Sid”; no allusion was intended nor do have the pieces anything to do with each other. The playback does not really do justice to the trombone glissandos and hand-in-bell “wah-wah” sections that begin at Letter L. Enjoy!
