(Anacreon was a 6th century B.C. Greek poet whose verses often celebrated women, wine and entertainment.) John Stafford Smith composed the tune in the mid-1760’s, while still a teenager. The bawdy lyrics of "To Anacreon in Heaven" were replaced by patriotic lyrics in the U.S., originally by Robert Treat Paine, Jr., ("Adams and Liberty"), and later by Francis Scott Key.
