Although numerous composers have done so inadvertently, I believe this piece represents the first conscious attempt in music to set a Shakespearean tragedy several hundred meters underwater. Even the finny creatures of the deep are, deep down, just like us, and have the same feelings, heartaches, and ultimately futile emotions.
Despite my sometime efforts to stop writing blues and bossa novas, explorations at the piano often end up generating pieces in these seemingly inexhaustible idioms. Unlike some similar ventures into this musical territory, This piece is, in effect, through composed.
I have included a sample solo section here, for folks who might want to download this one and play along with it. The restatement of the melody after the solos is significantly different than the first time, including a lengthy coda. The aim was to generate the sense of a larger whole, as if the melody restatement reflects the ideas of the intervening soloists.
Dedicated with the greatest love and enthusiasm to my dear son Timothy.
