The Song of the Shepherds returns to the medieval tradition of carols as narrative folk songs with a communal refrain which the people join with both singing and dancing.
A narrator or choir tells the shepherds' story, while the surprisingly catchy refrain is easy for a congregation at a carol service to learn without hymn books.
The refrain is sung quietly at first but builds in intensity to a loud climax at bars 39-40.
It was written for guitar but could be equally led on a piano.
