The short song cycle was written during the 2nd year of my studies at Goldsmith's College, London. I decided to set 3 short texts by the pre-Raphaelite poet, Christina Rossetti. These pieces were written with the voice of the jazz singer, Joanne Hughes, in mind. However, these songs can quite easily be performed by a classical alto voice. The instrumentation of clarinet, voila and cello give the music an overall darker, more mellow hue that I think compliments the rather morose, inward-looking, yet endearingly touching poetry of Rossetti.
