1. When autumn nights were long and drear, and forest walks were dark and dim, how sweetly on the pilgrim's ear was wont to steal the hermit's hymn.
2. It warmed his heart to share that song and quickened up his lively pace. He joined in worship heaven's throng and sung with thoughts of saving Grace.
3. Devotion borrows music's tone, and music took devotion's wing; and like the bird that hails the sun, they soar to heaven, and soaring sing.
4. He onward strove with spirit bold, his path was lit by guiding moon. He knew 'twould be as prophets told: the King of Love is coming soon.
