This setting of Robert Browning’s "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" was written originally in 1968 as the result of a commission from the Farnham Festival and was first performed there in 1969. It was scored for Female Voices, Piano Duet, Timpani and three Percussionists. This orchestral version uses the same forces with the addition of flute, oboe, clarinet, two trumpets and strings.
There is an extended solo for solo soprano at the end which is usually sung by a member of the chorus.
