This setting of Robert Browning’s "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" was written in 1968 as the result of a commission from the Farnham Festival and was first performed there in 1969. It is scored for Female Voices, Piano Duet, Timpani and three Percussionists. There is also version for the same forces with the addition of flute, oboe, clarinet, two trumpets and strings.
There is an extended solo for soprano at the end of the work; a part that is usually taken by a member of the chorus.
