Jean-Baptiste Faure (15 January 1830–9 November 1914) was a celebrated French operatic baritone and an art collector of great significance. He also composed a number of classical songs, including this one, originally published as "Les Rameaux" ("The Palms") in 1864, a setting of a French text by Jules Bertrand. The English lyric is attributed to Theodore H. Baker. One of Faure's most enduring songs, it was recorded by Enrico Caruso, among others. Jean-Baptiste Faure should not be confused with French composer and organist, Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) who composed a world-famous Requiem and other works; they were not related. [WIKIPEDIA]
