The Message, depicts the journey taken by a bottle with a message contained within, which was cast into Morecambe Bay a few years ago by a little girl called Alesha Johnson. The bottle, which was documented by world media to have taken a considerable journey around the globe, ended up in Perth, Australia.
This programmatic musical journey, reminds us that even in a world with such damage, evil and adversity, there is also celebration for the innocence of the young. In this case, a young girl, who took time to write a simple message that reached its destination by overcoming incredible odds. The bottle is a symbol of hope and prosperity in a world so fraught with danger, negativity and a victim to the human condition. Fundamentally, the Message is also homage to the millions of tragic journeys that have involved the Bay, the Seas and the Oceans. This piece seeks to memorialise the memories of millions, who have made their own journeys across Lancashires waters.
It is an honour that Aine is to perform the premiere of this piece for you this evening, further spreading this message of hope, both in St Martins and in Trinity College London. I do hope that you have a pleasant onward journey this evening and forever more. Thanks for listening,
Euan Smith.
