This March for Brass Band was written in memory of the 6 men from Tolpuddle who were wrongly accused on trumped-up charges of swearing illegal oaths in 1834, because they asked for a wage increase as agricultural workers after twice having their weekly pay cut. They were put on trial and sentenced to Transportation to Australia where they were treated cruelly as prisoners both aboard ship and in the convicts' colony. After an outcry in England by the general public, they were eventually released with a full pardon and after some years of hard labour, returned to England,. They are now revered as being partly responsible for the starting of Trade Unionism in Britain and their sacrifices are celebrated every year in Tolpuddle (Dorset) at The Martyrs' Festival in July. All proceeds from any sales of this music will go to Angels Charity for Autism Support in Hertfordshire, U.K. Many thanks.
