The Lonely Mule is not about a donkey, but a smuggler. What is he smuggling? We may never know. He may not even know that he is smuggling something.
The story begins with a tourist on a cautious journey into a foreign land. It is then interupted with a frantic run (arpeggio section) for ones life from the authorities. Upon escaping the chase the tourist celebrates with with cheap booze and dances the the strange beat (7/8 section) of a local band of musicians. The next morning (da capo)it is back to wandering alone.
