I wanted to compose an anthem for my wedding in 2003, for the point of the ceremony just before the bride came down the aisle. Flicking through a Bible, I was lucky enough to find just the words I needed in Psalm 45.
The first jubilant section describes how 'The King's Daughter is all glorious within, her clothing is of wrought gold.' The mystical middle section describes the entourage and ritual surrounding the princess. Finally, a burst of the opening music evokes her entrance 'with joy and gladness'.
The anthem sounds modern but, I hope, accessible. It is unusual both in time signature (7/2 - but surprisingly catchy) and harmony (rather than using intervals of a third, the chords are built on fourths, which grow out of the melodic fanfare that permeates the piece).
