"The Keys to Canterbury" was first printed in Norfolk in 1849, but the origins of it and several similar songs probably date back to courtship rituals of Elizabethan times. This arrangement is based on a version sung in about 1964 by Toby Lighthizer to the Californian folk song collector Miriam Berg. The attached recording is of the first performance of a version adapted for community choir, including instrumental parts added by David Knotts, who here directs Faversham Voices.
