This simple ballad about the fate of a most unlikely sailing ship and its very motley crew is a great favourite. The kids in my orchestra loved playing it, all of them sawing away with great gusto. In the last verse "The ship struck a rock/Oh Lord, what a shock", portrayed in the music, was always a source of amusement. No finesse is needed here––this is a fun piece to finish off rehearsal and send everybody home happy, looking forward to next wek's practice.
