First performed in 1889, The Gondoliers was the twelfth of the Gilbert and Sullivan collaborations, and it contains a great deal of fine music. The overture uses several of the opera’s most attractive melodies, and this arrangement gives all five instruments something of interest. With its tuneful character and rapid changes of mood this piece would make a useful curtain-raiser for concert performance.
