Like El Capitan and The Bride Elect, The Free Lance offers selections from its eponymous operetta. Sousa expanded the structure to include a repeated 16-bar transition to the trio. Also like his previous operetta marches, he changed the meter from 6/8 to 2/4 in the trio.
