This piece �The Empty Head� has two very different sections. The first of which starts very slowly and quietly with all instruments concentrating mainly on melodic and harmonic qualities of different phrases. The piece steadily moves forward in a very flowing manor until the ensemble reaches a final cadence. There is then a short pause before a swift change in character. This change is firstly illustrated by a very playful repeated pattern, which is given by the 2nd Clarinet, and then gradually the Bassoon and 1st Clarinet contribute different melodies and rhythmic patterns with a similar character to add a little more diversity. The character of this second section is quite energetic but light hearted at the same time to begin with, but by the time these different rhythmic phrases have begun to develop, it becomes very hyperactive and the climactic shrill repeated notes on both Clarinets at the end of the piece show a complete contrast to the opening bars. My general intention of the piece was to create something that would gradually build and develop from almost nothing from the start and to the end with the maximum of force and momentum from all instruments. The title �The Empty Head� is not intended necessarily to reflect the music in any way, but to represent a feeling of complete silence and stillness within one�s mind.
