The Choros comes historically from ancient Greece - the dancers link hands and turn in circles, wheels within wheels, closer, further, then ever closer to the centre. It is known today, in Romania and Israel, as the Hora. At the close the oboe moves round and round the shortest of motifs. Yet this dance, historically, knows of no beginning, and like the Lament of the Ages, it has, in a different sense, a timeless quality.

NB There is an instrument change from oboe d'amore to oboe for this movement. The percussionist is to intuitively choose the right moment to strike the initial notes for the dramatic change of mood.
