The title of this piece refers to the initial open fifth which is reminiscent of a horn call. Much of this piece draws melodic elements from my Horn Sonata, particularly the final section of the second movement. The piĆ¹ mosso section of this piece features a Balinese gamelan-style texture, complete with kotekan (interlocking melodies, such as the flutes and the alto saxes), punctuation, accents marking the end of a section, and a repeating bass line in the style of a jublag melody.
This piece was composed at the request of Brett Ikehara for his December 2010 recital.
