"The Big Barn" refers to the Gaelic College, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (The Great Barn of Ostaig), on the Isle of Skye where this tune finally saw the light of day after rattling around for some time. After a course on traditional Scottish piano accompaniment in 1997 I was allowed to spend a couple of days in the peace of the original barn itself writing out various tunes of which this was one. More recently I extended the original composition and entered the piece into the Aberdeen Strathspey and Reel Society composition competition where it won joint first prize. This might be described as a slow reel so do not feel you need to play it at a pace.
