The 12 Days of Christmas Presents is a light-hearted look at what might have happened if a dozen dead composers were given the opportunity to present a musical gift based on one of the twelve days.
Their submissions sometimes play on the number; for example, "two turtle doves" becomes a duet by Telemann.
At other times, the composer plays with the traditional gift; for example "three French hens" becomes a French dance for ladies by Offenbach (think hen party …).
Others are musical portraits of the gift itself as in Saint-Saen's The Swan (Carnival of the Animals) for “seven swans a-swimming”.
Try to guess how each one relates to the traditional gift. If you are stumped, there is a free solution sheet available from the composer.
Although most of the choral parts are unison, the work requires considerable practice because of the numerous tempo and key changes but is well worth the effort and is a winner with audiences. A recorded accompaniment is available from the composer for rehearsal purposes.
This work can be performed by: - Choir and wind quintet - Choir and piano - Wind quintet alone - Piano solo
