This was a very difficult commission: the piece had to be quite easy but display the few higher standard players; it had to be Christmassy without being too twee; it had to be written for an insane orchestration to fit this particular band; and it had to be between three and four minutes long. It’s not for me to decide whether or not I have succeeded but it was a good discipline to try.
To understand the title you need to know this was written for Christmas and within which valley Andover lies.
