The tambourin is a type of country dance from the Provence region of France, so called because of the sort of drum used to accompany the dancers. The origins of Gossec’s Tambourin remain in doubt – it is often credited as part of his one-act light opera about the French Revolution, Le Triomphe de la Republique (or Le Camp de Grandpré) but does not actually feature in early publications of this work.
