Thomas Tallis was one of the greatest Tudor composers, working for Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth I. He was court composer from 1543 until his death in 1585 and wrote music for both Roman Catholic and Church of England services. He contributed nine tunes to Archbishop Parker's "The whole Psalter translated into English Metre" (London, 1567). The ninth of these tunes has become known as "Tallis's Canon" and is usually coupled with words by Thomas Ken (1637-1711), "Glory to thee, my God, this night".
