In his 6th symphony, Bruckner broke new ground in this scherzo and trio. This was his first ever slow scherzo and the trio is rather concise for Bruckner. His landlord's rent subsidy (Dr. Oelzelt loved his music) made it possible for him to teach fewer lessons and compose more music.
