The Symphony No. 5 is neo-romantic, joyful and extravert. It is scored for a normally sized symphonic orchestra. It consists of four movements. The 1st one is a fast movement in sonata form (but with mixed development and reprise), preceded by a slow introduction. It is based on three themes (a lively and joyful one, a choral and a singing one). The development section starts a bit after 6’00”. The 2nd one is a slow, moving and solemn monothematic movement in the form of a passacaglia. The theme is 16 bars long and there are 9 variations. The 3rd one is a scherzo, characterised by the alternation of a short uprising motif and its development, and a flowing second episode that is developed (marked cavalleresco and with a characteristic recurrent four note-motif in the timpani). The middle section is dancelike (with a beautiful trumpet solo), and somewhat nostalgic. The 4th movement (or finale) is a fast movement in sonata form (but with mixed development and reprise), preceded by a solemn and joyful choral, after which two very distinct themes (one reminding of the fist theme of the first movement, and a rather slow, solemn and moving second theme) are setting the scene. The development section starts around 3'00". A short triumphal coda concludes the symphony. Digital performance using Sibelius 6 and Garritan Personal Orchestra.
