It’s eight movements represent each of the eight regions of the large Spanish Province. The third movement is Granada. The symphony is not intended to be a travelogue. It is personal impression created by the scenery and the people, but there are occasional flashes of Spanish influence to be found, and this is the only one of my 41 symphonies to include a guitar in its instrumentation. Before you reach for the phone to summon the men in white coats, it’s worth remembering that a large number of American Westerns were made in Almeria, as the scenery closely resembles the American original Wild West.
