The Symphony No. 4 is neo-romantic, bright and extravert. It is scored for a large symphonic orchestra (with four Wagner Tubas as in my 1st symphony). It consists of four movements. The 1st one is a fast movement in sonata form (but with mixed development and reprise), based on two very distinct themes (the first a lively and witty one based on the alternation of major and minor, and the second a solemn and mysterious one in which the Wagner Tubas play the main role). The development section starts a bit before 4’00”. The 2nd one is a scherzo, characterised by the alternation of a flowing main theme and a dancing second one (marked cavalleresco) with some heroic solos for the trumpet and trombone. The middle section is calm and pastoral (with a beautiful solo for the English Horn). The 3rd one is a slow movement based on two themes (a cantilena for the solo clarinet with gentle accompaniment, and a theme based on a rising motif in the low strings). The development starts a bit after 1’50” and the Wagner Tubas play a major role in it. Magic happens (if I may say so) when a chorale is mixed in (a bit after 3’20”). The 4th movement (or finale) is a fast and bright piece in rondo form. It is based on a gentle main theme beginning pizzicato and a chorale as (part of the) second theme. A short triumphal coda concludes the symphony. Digital performance using Sibelius 6 and Garritan Personal Orchestra. Score moving videos on my YouTube-channel.
