The subtitle of this four-movement work was suggested by the principal thematic material found in each movement. The work opens, for instance, with a passacaglia in the low strings and a clarinet melody high overhead that are suggestive of Gershwin. The movements, played one after the other without interruption, are joined by bridge passages that make the transitions between movements a little obscure. The grand stately theme of the fourth movement might be considered the �Americana� theme for the whole work.
