1st movement Allegro Moderato
This three movement symphony uses a very unusual orchestra. The strings, percussion, harp and piano doubling celesta are normal, but the woodwind and brass sections contain only those instruments which are normally regarded as extras, as detailed below: Piccolo, Alto Flute, Cor Anglais, E flat Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Contrabassoon, Piccolo Trumpet, Bass Trumpet, Alto Trombone, Contrabass Trombone and Tenor Tuba.
The first movement begins by stating several thematic snippets all of which are developed as the movement progresses.
