The movement is subtitled with a quote from the end of Stephen Hawking?s book ?A Brief History of Time? Hawking (a fellow ALS sufferer) writes "…the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for then we would know the mind of God." When faced with a degenerative incurable disease both the sufferer and those close ask themselves questions like this all the time. The movement provides no answers, for the moment there are none, and there might never be, but it is my musical posing of the question. Again the two early Violin Sonatas are briefly quoted.
