My fourteenth symphony in one movement is much tougher and grittier than any of the other six symphonies I have written since last Septemebr when I retired to Mallorca.
The music is very nearly atonal in style with only occasional glimpses of a possible key centre. There is much use of devices such as canon, inversion and retrograde, though the music is never serial.
The opening bar contains the motivic seed for the whole work.
