13 years after the disastrous 1877 Vienna premiere, Vienna warmly received Bruckner's 3rd symphony in 1890. Likewise 23 years after his 1st symphony premiered in Linz (1868), Vienna cheered his 1st symphony in 1891. He made substantial cuts and other revisions in the 1889 version of the 3rd but kept almost all of the music in his 1891 version of the 1st. However he revised the scoring, harmony and voice leading throughout and wrote a few new transitions heard here in the 1st symphony Scherzo. Most Bruckner fans disagree with me but I rather like his youthful work as filtered through the eyes of age.
