Too slight to be called a symphony, too complete in itself to live as a movement of a symphony, this work was given a simpler designation. Mysterious passages alternate with a pounding passacaglia-like theme. Bitonality is common, with pairs of conflicting triads in various positions running contrary to each other. All these elements surround a central section enshrining a theme (with accompanying harmony) of diatonic glory, a few moments of reality in a sea of fantasy
