This is Mvt. 1 of 3 (2 & 3 will follow soon). This symphony is based upon one simple motif: La-Me-Do-Sol, passed throughout the instruments of the orchestra. A driving 15/8 rhythmic ostinato gives a relentless beat, repeated with dynamic and tone color variations until punctuated by a forceful and determined brass entrance, announcing a change to a plaintive melody in the strings. This melody is repeated in the brasses, and ultimately returns to the driving rhythm before another brass outburst, signaling the end of the movement.
