In the context of both ‘Hidden Passageways’ and ‘Meandering Tributaries’, this composition was intended to be performed in between the two. The Fibonacci sequence was used as a structural device where the numbers break the composition into groups of bars that are inline with the numbers. To separate these groups, a bar containing a chromatically ascending phrase starting on C-sharp was utilised. Given this, the sections are split into a group of 8 bars, a group of 5 bars, a group of 3 bars, a group of 2 bars and a singular bar. Once the composition reaches a singular bar, this idea is reversed.
There is one central theme throughout this composition that is based upon seventh and diminished seventh chords. The performer is encouraged to use the sustain pedal throughout these passages and play ‘rubato’ to add more expression into the phrases. In order to create more variety within the chords, transposition is used as well as shortening and lengthening of the theme. Overall, the composition should work as a transition between the other piano pieces in this thesis as well as a standalone piece.
(Composed for an assignment at the University of Birmingham)
