Max Oesten (1843-1917) was a German composer and pianist known for his virtuosic piano compositions and his contributions to piano pedagogy. He was born in Berlin, Germany, and studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin with Julius Stern and Ernst Rudorff.

Oesten's works were heavily influenced by the Romantic period and often featured dramatic melodies and virtuosic piano passages. His most famous composition is likely "Morceaux caractéristiques," a set of six pieces for piano that was published in 1877.

In addition to his work as a composer, Oesten was also a respected piano teacher and wrote several instructional books, including "Die Grundlagen des Klavierspiels" (The Fundamentals of Piano Playing) and "Klavierschule" (Piano School). He also edited several piano works by other composers, including Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt.

Oesten died in Berlin in 1917, but his legacy as a composer and pedagogue has lived on. His compositions continue to be performed and recorded, and his instructional books remain valuable resources for piano students and teachers alike.
